Course Overview

Direct Assessments – Fiber and Copper provides a competency-based assessment pathway for telecommunications workers who already have relevant workplace experience or prior training. Rather than completing a full training program, participants demonstrate their existing knowledge and practical capability through assessment.

For the Copper Direct Assessment pathway, participants complete an online knowledge assessment before progressing to the practical assessment. The assessment focuses on copper telecommunications activities across access network environments, allowing experienced workers to demonstrate competency in specific skills. Participants are expected to have appropriate prior experience and/or training in the skill area being assessed.

Key Skills / What You Will Learn

  • Demonstrate knowledge required for the selected copper telecommunications skill
  • Complete basic jumpering activities at pillars and/or nodes
  • Install underground copper joint enclosures
  • Perform copper jointing procedures
  • Carry out copper cut-ins to mains cable
  • Locate and address copper network faults
  • Apply appropriate workplace practices during practical assessment

Completion / Outcome

Successful completion of the required knowledge and practical assessments confirms competency in the selected assessment area. Direct assessment does not result in a training certificate; assessment results are provided to the relevant service provider as required for their competency records.
